Sadie didn't want to give up, but it was a losing battle with Mannie.
"Who are you?" She asked the first time she woke up. "What do you want from me?" She was so out of it she could barely sit up and didn't know where she was.
He mentioned his name and he needed her help.
"I can't help," she wasn't made for this kind of matter he spoke of. Something about going underground. She'd done her best to escape, but dam if he wasn't good and knocking her out with one touch at the side of her neck.
When she awoke again, it was daylight and she thought he might be asleep, but no, he was right next to her staring her down. His dark eyes peering at her as if he might put her in a trance.
"You'll see, you might like it," he was ever so bright-eyed about it.
"Never," she turned from him to get up but he wrapped his arms around her stomach and brought her right back to him. It was like she was carrying the weight of the world. "I have to go to the bathroom." She was sure she could get away from him then, but she was in his sweatshirt now and barefooted.
She thought for a moment she would have to carry him into the bathroom with her which wasn't much of a bathroom with a shower stall along with an old sink and commode she guessed was more sanitary than she thought. But still, this man lived in a cave, she thought. Even so, he tied a rope around her stomach and held on to it from the bathroom door. Her strength was waning.
"I wish you would trust me," he said from the other side to the bathroom door.
"Oh really?" She almost got a chuckle out of that, but she was really too hungry to fight him. Seriously, the world was getting more dizzy.
"What about my cat?" Sadie wanted to remind him how important Hilda was to her.
"I sent the boys to take care of that," Mannie shrugged.
Oh, she was ready to kill him if he did anything to her furbaby.
"They will make sure she's well-fed and loved," he grabbed her wrist once more as if she might decide to run to the street.
"You're not anything like I expected," Sadie wanted him to at least be the dashing stranger in her imagination, but he was definitely not.
He hesitated to respond, but finally said, "I'm sorry I got you into this."
"What were you doing at that place?" Sadie wanted to know what else was going at the buffet the night they bumped into each other.
"It was someone who I've waited all year to meet. We were having tea." He told her.
"Tea?" Sadie squinted, shaking her head no, but he said there was a tea room upstairs for meetings.
She rolled eyes thinking he was much too stubborn, but she guessed he thought the same of her.
"Look, if..if you do leave, they will find you," Mannie said he would protect her.
Sadie sighed sensing there was no way out of this.
Mannie the protector

Look like that Mannie will not rest until every threat to her has been eliminated. No matter the cost.
